What a crazy year it has been! It has been tough on everyone and the social distancing measures have changed everything from Cons and Expos to simple weekly get togethers. Without the option to go to your local game shop, many people have taken to online gaming. Services like Dnd Beyond and Roll20 have put their development into high gear and offer some very solid options for those gamers that embrace technology and don't mind gaming in front of a screen.
We have been in a long running campaign (3 years or so) and made the transition to online gaming in the spring when COVID came to town. We use Discord for video chat, Dnd Beyond for Character management, and Roll20 for maps and encounter management. In some ways it makes life easier since we live in a city about an hour drive away from our fellow players, so it saved us time and money. It's the lack of real world interaction that defintely takes it's toll.
In the meantime, while the world is in semi-lockdown we learn and adapt and thrive online. Learn the tools, there are tons of videos on YouTube that will explain the ins and outs to you. If you are looking for a group, Roll20 has social tools to hook you up with players whether you want to DM or play. It may seem daunting to learn a new game such as Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, or even wargaming like Warhammer 40k. As long as you have the interest and put in the time and effort to learn you may just discover your newesrt obsession in a world full of fantasy!
